RTE - A Prime Example Of The Unbiased Media In Action

January 18th, 2007 by Bif

Here’s a lesson in unbiased reporting from Irish state broadcaster, and tv license fee recipient, Radio Telefis Eireann. An Oireachtas Commitee hold a public consultation on new broadcasting legislation, part of which would expand the scope of the television license to cover mobile and internet content etc. Up steps technology expert Ronan Coy to offer his opinion. RTE news quote him as saying…

…television can include anything that is made visually available to the consumer, including developments such as Internet-based television stations and video blogging.

Which earns both RTE and Ronan Coy the wrath of Feckoff.net. Only Ronan himself sees the post and points out that he wasn’t actually speaking in support of the new legislation, quite the contrary.

I’m the Ronan Coy that made those comments but they are taken out of context… I was referring to the definition in the new Broadcasting law. I am arguing against this new law and its crazy implementation. I stated that the new law would include any device capable of recieving a TV signal which is total bullshit. As far as I am concerned YouTube, video blogging, molbile TV should not be included as forms of TV subject to a license, unfortunately the new law wants to change all that. I want to have the law modified or scrapped entirely as there are other ways for RTE to make its money.

As the man says, so much for the independent media. Here’s what I say. If RTE can’t manage on the money they get or can’t think of alternative ways to earn, let’s take the fucking license fee off them, kick Pat Kenny, Joe Duffy and Ryan Tubridy out on their over-paid arses and give the bobs to TG4, who, even with their meagre resources, have at least attempted to fill the remit of a public service broadcaster.

Their strategy is all wrong. If they want to increase revenue they should send Pat Kenny door to door to collect the licence fee. I know even if i never saw a television in my life, I for one, would pay good money for him to go away.

You pay money to watch adds, why do we stand for this kind of shit!?

  3. Bif (author) Says:

We, supposedly, tolerate the ads alongside the license fee because historically our population would never have supported a totally non-commercial station. Whether it would or not now is another question. I would still argue in favour of a public service broadcaster and if you wonder why, just take a look at TV3 or Channel 6. I just happen to believe that TG4 have shown themselves to be a much more creative broadcaster and would be far more capable of filling the role of national broadcaster - they might even be capable of doing it on the license fee alone. RTE are, at this stage, just carrying too much dead weight.

  4. Gamma Goblin Says:

Historically, it was ok to blow up the brits! TG4 is the best channel on terrestrial TV in Ireland. They provide more national content that either RTE 1 or 2 and manage to make it feel local. They show decent films too! If only they got rid of that “alien” language some of the programs are presented in :)

If RTE got rid of the adds, we’d deffinately be getting nothing for our money!

  5. Bif (author) Says:

I think they spend all the licence fee on Pat Kenny, so I suppose they could just get him to do everything.

It’s true. For a fraction of the money, TG4 do everything RTE is supposed to do and they do it better. They even make the weather watchable.

  6. Gamma Goblin Says:

Oh man dont mention the weather, there’s one presenter they have that when she turns around, the whole of Connaught disappears :)

  7. Bif (author) Says:

Yes and I bet they don’t even mind.

  8. Gamma Goblin Says:

I just noticed that you can watch TG4 online with a selction of past programming to choose from. Fantastic channel!

People!! are you living in the 21st century!!?? What’s wrong with you?
you all know very well that the tv license, now days, is another lame excuse, for the government to raise funds from the poor us…yes it made sense in the 1930, 40, 50’s until the 1990… when in this country were just a few people and for a national tv station to run, the people needed to help out( and it made sense ), but now, we are at in the 21st century, battle of the fittest!! hello!! what ever happened with the right to free, uncensored information, the right to access this information freely and at whatever time you want??? we have the right to choose, a freedom of choice, there is not only the national tv station, we have other choices, if the national tv can not manage themselves than good luck and nice knowing you. But don’t ask the people to chip in, when we have so much choice.
tv licensee? a licensee for a TV?? you realize the times we are living now are much different then the time that this law was issued!? is like that law in England where in some particular time of the day, on a particular street in London you could kill a Scott and get away with it. Yeah …That old!!
You do realize that the national tv stations are making their monies from other sides and not the tv license …i.e. commercials…yeah a good example!! if I pay for a a national tv station to survive I expect that I am not going to be cluttered with people that are trying to sell me things that I don’t need.
We should all stop paying this ridiculous tax!!
