Blog comment policy.
We didn't, so when bizarre comments started pouring in we didn't know how to respond. Myself and Bif had to discuss on a comment by comment basis which comments deserved or required deletion, and inevitably we disagreed on some.
If you don't set a policy for yourself, you may find yourself in the same situation. It's better to have a clear policy from the outset - that way as soon as the comments start to get disorderly, you already know which ones violate your terms.
As mentioned in an article I found on comment policies, there are two ends to the comment policy spectrum:
- Allow all comments, whatever the content
- Tightly moderate comments such that comments reflect only what the blog owner wants seen.
The article in question however advocates a tighter hold on comments than I think I am comfortable with. The article makes an interesting point about how comments and discussion in regard to negative aspects of your business might be interpreted by readers.
We're not going to stop discussion about negative aspects of our site. However we are going to put some ground rules in place.
Putting these rules together wasn't really what I wanted to do. In a way I felt like I was going against my instinct, which was to let things run and only delete the outrageous comments. However that was not practical. Without a clear policy in place there were certain comments I couldn't make a decision on. And with both myself and Bif involved there were disagreements.
Here's what we put together - a ten point blog comment policy!
- Comments must be on topic. In other words comments must relate in some way to the post you are commenting to!
- Comments should not contain profanity. Please refrain from strong language.
- Comments must not contain personal attacks or any material that might be viewed as defamatory of another individual.
- Spam or advertising is not allowed - however relevant, on topic links are allowed.
- Anonymous posting is discouraged and may result in comment deletion.
- Negative comments about our content or site are fine if reasonably argued.
- All comments are solely the opinions of the individuals submitting them and the publication of them on BifSniff.com does not imply endorsement or agreement by either Bif or Frank.
- All of the above are at defined at our discretion. We reserve the right to prohibit all comments, to delete or edit all or any portion of any comment made, and to ban any commenter or IP address from making any comments to this blog.
- We reserve the right to refine our comment policy from time to time!
- Your submission of a comment consititutes your acceptance of this comment policy.
We'd also be very interested to hear general views on comment policies and anecdotes about comment issues.

This is a nonsense. If you wish to construct a legal document I suggest you consult a lawyer. The articles as they stand are in conflict with the individual´s right to freedom of expression. Article 8 is of particular concern : "to delete or edit all or any portion of a comment made". The idea that lesser hands should see fit to tamper with the work of a greater scribe is an insult to enlightened civilisation. Delete all if you must, but do not dare deface the work of an artist. Vive la revolution! Death to all oppressors! Let us hang these swine by their entrails! Afterward I shall take their guts for garters!
Sorry Ms. Baumgarten but the only rights to freedom of expression any individual has here are the ones we choose to afford them. It's great to finally be an oppressor.
While Ms. Baumgarten is an obvious prankster, some of what she says rings true. You lads are totally over-reacting, and it´s your own over-reaction which has fuelled and is therefore responsible for your current troubles. Tho I´m sure your actually delighted with all the hits any such problems have brought with them. With "your skinhead and braces" it should always have been clear you were a bigot, fanatic and collector of Nazi memorabilia. it's true, your over-reaction fuelled the interest. It created an interesting dialogue which included some interesting characters (with the added option of sniggering at the odd cartoon). So symbolic of the post-post modern malais we have found ourselves in...no-one seems to know what is right or wrong or fascist or liberal bigotted...it is a clever parody of today's pretty schizoid planet...and if you start reacting against this, it plainly shows you for pretty petty liberal facsists(!!!) and I will never grace your site again. Also, it has been fun deducing and analysisng both your characters and personalities by your responces to certain 'tests'...you both set yourselves up for perfectly. It was not your intention for this to happen, but come on, what type of viewer did you really expect?? You guys, as 'comics' should really just appreciate the wit that has presented itself to you.
I appreciate your point perfectly but your misunderstanding why we've done this. We don't mind the criticisms or even most of the pranks. It's to be expected and some of them really were class. But what has happened on a number of occasions is people have chimed in with purely offensive remarks - often aimed at other commentors on the site. Alot of it was just mindless guff that had no purpose. If it makes me a petty liberal fascist to delete comments like 'you're so gay' or remarks about rape that clearly offended others on the site, then fine - I've been called alot worse. And if you honestly think you can surmise anything about my character or personality from the way I react to any of these comments, you're clearly reaching. All we've called for here is modicum of respect to the other people on the site. If you don't like that, and I've said it before, you don't have to come back. You'd probably be a little surprised at how little I care.
