Heath Ledger Joker
Both of us were a bit stumped by this news - while we weren't appalled, neither of us could picture Ledger as the joker. Enter photoshop - just to see if it could work at all I lashed up these two images:

Hmm. I guess it could work... at a stretch, though when Bob Byrne did up Adrian Brody as the joker I have to say that really worked for me...
If I had time I would 'evil him up' a little, maybe that would help...
Either way, I was quite disappointed with Batman Begins, so I won't be holding my breath for the sequel.

What a crappy choice.
I could forgive Jack Nicholson being the wrong shape and size cos he has menace and character, and he's just that good.
I've nothing against Heath Ledger, but there are tonnes of actors out there way better suited to the part, both physically and character wise.
I think Crispin Glover would've been perfect if they'd had the balls to cast him. He can do seriously freaky, but you'd also believe he could beat someone to death with a crowbar and still be laughing at the end of it.
It's bizarre. Since when was the joker a bland pretty boy? Crispin Glover would be ideal but there are any number of actors who would make more sense than Ledger. Christ, were the just offered the choice between him and Ben Affleck?
Crispin glover or Brody. I suppose they have to sell it the girls and not have a fucked up scary joker. Bad casting at its worst. Nice paint job though Frank. Who's going to be Batman? Whoopi Goldberg?
First off, you can’t put ‘Batman Returns’ next to any of the other sequels. Christen Bale managed to get into that raw vigilantly psychotic characters mind more so than the broody chinless performance by Michael Keating. Both Keating and Nicholson were miscast ‘on reflection’ but were prepared to take a chance with Tim Burton who was the best thing about that movie in the late 80’s. Don’t get me wrong, the original is still classic and the sequels had a few unmentionable merits and quite a few questionable parts. Lets us just forget about them and save ourselves some embarrassment.
For me Bale is a great Dark Knight, with better direction he could be the best. ‘Dark Knight’ 2008, I hope that Heath ‘pretty boy’ Ledger pulls out. Just like he did in ‘Broke Back Mountain’. I have this mental picture of Heath and Christen in a tent…
Frank love the Photoshop, it convinces me more of how misplaced a good actor can be. I second Bob on Adrien Brody but whole-heartedly agree 100% with Emmet, “Crispin Glover would've been perfect” He has the facial/physical contortions, profile and could completely pull it off. That avenue would lead to a less marketable and thus lower revenue generating movie due to a higher rating level. Money is what it’s all about at the end of the day, such is life.
On a side note, Gary Oldman was the best Commissioner Gordon ever, you can’t argue with that! (Gary Oldman fan here)
I would love if someone started a campaign and online petition to have Crispin Glover cast as the Joker!

Above I meant Christian Bale.
Alternative Joker,
Steve Buscemi?
I think Crispin Glover would've been perfect if they'd had the balls to cast him.

For the record, Allen, Michael Keaton's name is not Michael Keating. Are you a moron? I'm not sure. You probably are.
All of your criticisms of Ledger are ridiculous. His joker will be amazing.
Did none of you see Broke Back Mountain? Ledger has an Australian accent in real life and he played a southern cowboy flawlessly. He's like Johnny Depp, he can play any role given to him. And I'm sure the makeup job will be quite different in the film, much darker and scarier.
Christopher Nolan knows what he's doing. Just like Bales's batman was different from Keaton's, Ledger's joker will be different than Nicholson's. Ledger's joker will probably be less over the top and silly, and a lot more frightening. I think Nolan is planning to give us a joker that really scares the hell out of us, not a prankster with ten foot long guns, but a real cold blooded psychopath. Just wait. I'm sure everyone will be eating their words once the film comes out.
Thanks for the compliment… eh, who are you? Strong words from a nobody.
"All of your criticisms of Ledger are ridiculous"
All of our criticisms of ledger are subjective. Just because he managed to do a cowboy accent doesn't make him a great actor. I think he's too bland to play the Joker and I've never once been impressed by him anyway. But then I don't believe Johnny Depp can play any role you give him either.
Crispin glover was put forward as a possibility because he could do a seriously sinister and menacing Joker.
As for Christopher Nolan knowing what he's doing - I'm sure he does but I've seen far more prolific directors make mistakes and I think he's made one.
I think the challenge here that you all are not thinking about is that when the 1989 Batman came out, no one knew what it was going to look like; no one knew how it was going to sound or feel to the oncoming audience. That’s the reason Nolan had to choose Heath Ledger. You already know what a Jack Nicholson-esque character will do, you know how kooky the Joker can get and that’s cool. BUT this is NEW STUFF! Forget the old 1989-97 stuff, it’s done. Christian Bale, Nolan, and even Heath may surprise you all when it hits the screen. You’ve just got to be open for the experience and quit holding on to OLD interpretations.
I actually think the 1989 Batman and it's successors were shite. My very simple argument here is that I don't rate Heath Ledger and I think it's a terrible bit of casting. If you were to cast to character then you would be looking at someone like Crispin Glover. Nobody is looking for a rehash of the Jack Nicholson interpretation because only he could get away with it. But why hire a pretty boy like Ledger to play the role of a deformed maniac? In my opinion it just doesn't make any sense.
I'd still love to see Willem Dafoe don the green hair and white face paint. He’s got the killer (pun intended) smile ideal to play the Joker. But alas, I’m sure it won’t be done since he just recently played a major comic book villain. Sniff…
i think they cast ledger because he already has the grin. if you check out his pics smiling, you'll see that his face already looks like it's been dropped into a vat of acid. lol.. anyway, bale is a great batman. If you check out his movies, you'll see that his playing a rich kid with very dark issues was inevitable. As for the martial arts stuff, check out equilibrium...
I think sam rockwell could have pulled
it off, I think he would have been perfect. He was certainly convincing as a lunatic in the green mile.
I hadn't thought of him but yes, he could have done it. He'd also have the neccesary pulling power to keep the money men happy.
whoever said heath ledger was good because of broke back mountain must be really gay and whats with this johnny depp crap thats really out of the blue, and i did like adrian brody for the joker and how you compared him with a white face and green hair it looked better than ledger and nicholson maybe you should do your own batman movie.(chuckle
