World Ill-Informed BifSniff Mobility Cup

Ok, I didn't think I'd be back before the World Cup was over but, rest assured, this will be a very short and ill-informed post. Apparently you can now get BifSniff Cartoons on your mobile (cell) phone or PDA. It's been done by a crowd called Plusmo, who seem to be delivering feeds and stuff to phones or mobile devices. It's the first I heard of them but if anyone's using it, let us know how the cartoons look. Nice idea anyway by the look of it.

Love BifSniff! I am one of the guys at Plusmo. Although I may be biased here is how it currently works on mobile devices...

- Works great on devices with larger screens such as Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, RIM Blackerry, Symbian Phones (eg UIQ) and many others
- On J2ME phones such as Motorola RAZR 6320, etc, its hard to read the text.

Plusmo resizes the images specific to the users phone, and makes a horizontal scrolling slideshow of all the images from your feed. For a single panel vertical cartoon such as yours, we may need to add up and down panning also.

Enjoy!

I like it. I downloaded it and looked at the BifSniff cartoons using plusmo, but while you can just about make out the graphics the text on the toons is unreadable. You'd have to be able to pull out the alt text or something... I wonder how we could do this... maybe a plusmo specific feed where we actually put the toon caption in as text... more work for us that way though :(

Still, could be an interesting test case...

Any thoughts/other suggestions...?

Yeah but if it works on the larger screened devices, will we need two plusmo feeds?

Here's an idea worth considering if this is the 'way of the future'... we start uploading only the graphical part of the cartoons and do the captions through css... then we could use stylesheets to cater for different devices...

I thought of this before but I felt it wasn't great because if people wanted to download the cartoons and email them or whatever it becomes a pain for them...

Maybe it's worth considering/testing on our small cartoons feed...

On a theoretical level it's an interesting idea anyway...

Getting plain text separately in the feed in addition to the picture would definitely work great! Please let me know if you do this - I'd love to try it out.

You don't need to cater to different devices in the feed. Plusmo resizes the pictures specifc to the phone screen size.
